That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of affection into a symbol of animosity who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, across decades rather than months, however it is still disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
