In the dying moments, sheer ecstasy broke out for Chelsea and interim manager Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández stabbed home a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola ranting in frustration and gifted the temporary Chelsea manager a truly golden moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane could be billed as the Premier League's most pronounced managerial mismatch, making the recollection of Fernández's crucial intervention one to warm the 40-year-old throughout his career.

A Stark Contrast in Pedigree

On the home bench stood the era's defining coach, a man with 40 trophies for elite clubs Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, overseeing his 1,012th match. In the visitors' dugout, was a one-time trainer at non-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and arrived to make his first-team debut after being seconded from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a slew of absences, headlined by Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task began as a mission that seemed Mission: Impossible.

“Rollercoaster” was the adjective McFarlane used to sum up his experience since being handed the role.

The first trick at City's fortress is to avoid an early goal, as a demolition can swiftly follow. An early Chelsea defender header clear from a corner indicated the visitors' goal was under siege immediately, yet McFarlane's side proved dogged throughout the encounter.

Another key part of his blueprint was to maximise disruption. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea slowed at a set-piece, a sure sign the hosts' rhythm was being disrupted and the Guardiola blueprint was being frustrated.

City eventually broke through just before the break, with Tijjani Reijnders drilling home the opener. Guardiola's celebratory reaction—embracing the fourth official from behind—added another odd entry to his catalogue of sideline antics.

The battle grew ever more fractious, with Delap booked after a melee, and City's defensive stalwarts, Rúben Dias and Josko Gvardiol, both substituted injured. Despite further Chelsea pressure, a second goal seemed to be escaping them, with Cole Palmer unable to get a touch in front of goal.
